The Heavyweight White Tee

The cheapest line on the rack and the most replaced — which is exactly why fabric weight matters. A heavy tee is a garment; a thin one is packaging.

The white tee is worn more than anything on the rack — under the merino, under the blazer, alone all summer — and it is the garment where the cheap version's failure is fastest. Lightweight jersey twists at the side seam after a few washes, the collar bacon-curls, and the body goes translucent. Fifteen honest wears is generous.

A heavyweight tee (look for 200 gsm and up) holds a collar, survives three years of rotation in a three-pack, and costs eleven cents a wear — the best ledger line on the site. Buy three at once: rotation is what makes the wears-per-year number real instead of theoretical.

Fit: the tee should skim, not cling, and the sleeve should end mid-bicep. White first; grey is the second color if the rack expands.

Care, which is where the ledger is won

Wash cold with whites only, skip the dryer when you can. White tees die by greying before they die by wear; wash them as their own load.
