Thirty-three pieces. One rack. No hauls.
ClotheRack is a capsule-wardrobe publication with one editorial rule: judge every garment by its cost per wear, publish the arithmetic, and admit it when the cheap version wins.
Most fashion publishing is paid to make you buy more, more often. Our incentive is narrower and, we think, more honest: this site is an experiment in whether a small publication that tells you to buy less — eight anchor pieces, bought well, worn for years — can still pay for itself through the affiliate commissions on those few purchases. The terms of the experiment are public, and so is its scoreboard: The Test.
The eight anchors
Every capsule starts with anchors — the pieces worn weekly, across seasons, that everything else is built around. These eight were chosen because their cost-per-wear ledgers are not close. Each page shows the full arithmetic, the construction details that make the expensive version last, and the care routine the wears-per-year figure depends on.
The White Oxford Shirt
The most-forgiven shirt in the rack. Oxford cloth hides wrinkles, takes a tie or none, and its weave survives the wash that kills broadcloth.
Well-made: $0.26/wear · Disposable: $0.42/wear
The Straight Wool Trouser
One pair of grey wool trousers does the work of four pairs of chinos, because grey goes with every top on the rack and wool refuses to hold a crease line or an odor.
Well-made: $0.36/wear · Disposable: $0.46/wear
The Unstructured Blazer
A soft-shouldered navy blazer is the rack's only formalizing move: it turns the tee and the oxford into two different outfits without adding a suit.
Well-made: $0.82/wear · Disposable: $1.00/wear
The Dark Indigo Jean
One dark, straight jean replaces the pile of seasonal denim. And an honest admission: this is the one piece where cheap almost wins the ledger — read why we still buy the good pair.
Well-made: $0.29/wear · Disposable: $0.27/wear
The Merino Crewneck
The rack's layering engine. Merino regulates temperature across three seasons, resists odor for days, and packs flat — one sweater, worn fifty times a year.
Well-made: $0.49/wear · Disposable: $1.20/wear
The Resoleable Loafer
Shoes are where cost-per-wear stops being a slogan. A welted loafer you can resole is a ten-year object; a glued one is a two-year rental you paid full price for.
Well-made: $0.41/wear · Disposable: $0.56/wear
The Trench Coat
Outerwear is the rack's longest ledger: a trench is bought once a decade, worn over everything, and is the strongest secondhand buy on this site.
Well-made: $0.74/wear · Disposable: $1.00/wear
The Heavyweight White Tee
The cheapest line on the rack and the most replaced — which is exactly why fabric weight matters. A heavy tee is a garment; a thin one is packaging.
Well-made: $0.11/wear · Disposable: $0.53/wear
Run your own ledger
Bring a price you are actually considering: the cost-per-wear calculator runs the same arithmetic as every ledger on this site, on your numbers — price, wears per year, years of service — and shows what the garment really costs each time you wear it.
What this site is not
Not a haul channel, not a trend feed, not a list of fifty links per outfit. If a piece cannot defend its place on the rack with arithmetic, it does not get a page.
