The Resoleable Loafer

Shoes are where cost-per-wear stops being a slogan. A welted loafer you can resole is a ten-year object; a glued one is a two-year rental you paid full price for.

The honest price of the good loafer is $325, not $240, because the ledger counts the resole: a Goodyear-welted shoe is built to have its sole cut off and replaced, and pretending that mid-life repair is free would cook the books. Even counting it, the welted shoe wins — eight years of service against two, and at year eight it is still resoleable.

A cemented (glued) sole cannot be replaced; when it wears smooth or separates, the whole shoe is done, uppers and all. Glued construction is why the average shoe wardrobe costs more per year than one good pair on rotation.

Loafers over lace-ups for the rack's single leather slot: they cross the line between trousers and jeans without changing, and they go on and off at airport security and front doors without a production.

Cedar shoe trees, always; rest a day between wears; condition quarterly. Trees alone roughly double an upper's crease-free life.
